Compression experiments of goethite samples from an iron ore mine in New Caledonia revealed the collapse of the porous samples to follow a power law behavior. The porosity varies between 54 and 84%. The collapse under compression occurs in a series of individual events (avalanches). Each avalanche leads to a jerk in sample compression …

Goethite
The Quartz crystals are quite gemmy, often with dark red brown Goethite/Hematite inclusions, measuring to almost 5mm. Restormel Iron Mines are well known for producing excellent crystals of Goethite, a mineral which normally forms in very small crystals, or massive crusts. This is a particularly pretty specimen from this mine.

Goethite
This goethite sample was formed after pyrite when chemical conditions changed. It retains the pyrite's basic cubic shape, so it is a pseudomorph. Pyrite is an iron sulfide, and goethite is an iron oxide hydroxide. This compares the goethite sample with a cubic pyrite sample from Ambassaguas mine, Amejun, La Rioja, Spain.
